Diese Replik zeigt das Motiv einer Assyrischen Sphinx, einer Schutzgottheit von der Gestalt eines geflügelten Löwen mit dem Kopf eines bärtigen Mannes und einer Hörnerkrone, die ihn als göttliches Wesen kennzeichnet.

Das Originalrelief befand sich ursprünglich im Palast des Dareios I. (erbaut ab ca. 500 bis 460 v.Chr.) in der achämenidischen Residenzstadt Susa und ist aus bunt bunt glasierten Ziegeln gefertigt. Paläste achämenidischer Könige wurden häufig mit mythologischen Fabelwesen dekoriert.

Während der Ausgrabungen am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts durch europäische Archäologen gab es eine Vereinbarung mit der Iranischen Regierung, dass alle Objekte aus Silber und Gold im Iran verbleiben müssen, wohingegen alle anderen in die jeweiligen Länder der Ausgrabungsteams ausgeführt werden konnten. Dieses im Original prachtvoll färbige Relief ist heute im Louvre in Paris zu bewundern.

Susa ist UNESCO-Welterbestätte seit 2015.

This replica shows the motif of an Assyrian Sphinx, a tutelary deity with the stature of a winged lion with the head of a bearded man and a horn crown, which identifies it as divine creature.

The original relief was originally located in the Palace of Dareios I. (constructed from about 500 to 460 BC) in the achaemenid residence city of Susa. It is made of coloured glazed tiles. Palaces of achaemenid kings were often elaborately decorated with mythical creatures.

At the time of excavation at the end of the 19th century done by European archaeologists, they had an agreement with the Iranian government, that all excavated objects made of gold and silver shall remain in Iran, other findings, however, could be transferred to their respective countries. The relief shown here, in original gorgeous and colourful, today is exhibited in the Louvre, Paris.
