Relief – Hammurabi’s law code

Dieses Motiv befindet sich an der Spitze der babylonischen Gesetzesstele von Hammurapi I.. Der am Thron sitzende Šamaš, in der akkadischen und babylonischen Mythologie Sonnengott und Gott der Gerechtigkeit, erkennbar an den Strahlen aus seinen Schultern, übergibt die Herrschaftsinsignien an Hammurapi, der vor ihm steht.

Der Kodex von Hammurapi I. gilt als eine der wichtigsten schriftlichen Hinterlassenschaften aus dem antiken Mesopotamien. Der Text wurde in Keilschrift auf einer Stele aus Diorit von 2,2 m Höhe verfasst. Er beinhaltet eine Sammlung von Rechtssprüchen aus der Regierungszeit des babylonischen Königs Hammurapi I. im 18. Jh. v.Chr..

Die Stele wurde im 12. Jh. v.Chr. aus Babylonien nach Susa gebracht. Sie befindet sich zurzeit im Louvre.

The motif of this relief is located on the top of a stone stele where Babylonian King Hammurabi’s law code has been carved. Šamaš, in Accadian and Babylonian mythology the God of sun and justice, identifiable by rays from his shoulders, hands over the insignia of authority to the King Hammurabi I. who is standing in front of him.

Hammurabi’s code of law is presumed to be mankind’s oldest code of law. The text is carved as cuneiform on a 2.2 m high diorite stele. It contains a collection of adjudications from the reign of Babylonian king Hammurabi I. (18^th century BC).

The Code has been transferred in the 12^th century BC from Babylon to ancient city of Susa. Today it is exhibited in the Louvre in Paris.
